Art & Craft Holiday Centre

What could be better than a vacation in sunny, southern Spain and getting to learn a new craft? Attend classes in our traditional Spanish farmhouse and stay in full-service, family-run hotel in the nearby town of Gebas. We plan on offering a variety of classes throughout the year and offer the most options for students wishing to learn painting or Spanish style basketmaking.

Braiding with Grass Crafty Tip
The Holiday Centre has shared with Crafty Tips a wonderful tutorial on how to make a plait of seven strands of grass.
How to start a plait of 7 strand of grass.

Take three strands of grass, each 6-8 blades. Hold the first horizontal and fold the second around the first so that you get a upward V with the right leg at the front. Do the same with the third strand and fold the left leg of strand 3 over the right leg of the second strand and under the left leg of the second strand. The right leg of the third strand goes behind the right leg and over the left leg of the second strand. Now you have on both sides 3 strands.

Take half of the bottom right strand, add 2 new blades of grass and fold it over the second and under the third strand (on the right). Now you still have 3 strands on the right and you have 4 strands on the left - 7 in total. Now you take all of the bottom left, fold it behind the second and third and over the fourth. now there are 3 left and 4 right. Work always from the side with four to the side with 3 strands and keep adding 2 new blades in every time. Leave the newly added blades sticking out a bit till you're finished, then cut them off. Always work with grass that has been soaked in water for a day. Sounds difficult? Just try it and you will find out. Spanish people have been doing this for centuries with plates up to 21 strands.
