Drawing & Painting Tips from friends of Crafty Tips

To transfer a text or an intricately detailed (small) image onto a canvas using a 'carbon-copy' method:

  1. Trace the image onto tracing paper.
  2. Turn the tracing paper over and 'scribble' over the image's outline on the reverse (so that there is lead covering the outline - it doesn't matter if it goes over the outline's edges).
  3. Place the paper, the right way up, onto the canvas and draw over the outline again, applying pressure but not to tear the paper - maybe use a biro pen. Your image will then be transferred onto the canvas surface, clearly and easy to paint.

Painting with Primary Colors

One of the most important things in making an attractive painting is to remember that color can really speak to the eye of the beholder. It is always attractive no matter where you add it into a painting. Do not be shy about the primary colors- red, yellow and blue. They can all be added if you are trying to make a dynamic painting. Remember, if you add a color some where on the canvas, you need to add it at least one more time in another place to keep the balance.

Katrina Schaman - Painting Portfolio

Portfolio site for emerging Canadian painter Katrina Schaman. Katrina's paintings celebrate the deep connection between abstract and real forms. The artist does not set out to paint specific forms but instead finds them within her work and brings them forward, allowing them to emerge organically with the piece itself dictating its own outcome. Katrina uses many complex layers in her search for the perfect balance between abstract and actual shapes.

Drawing & Painting Crafty Tip
If something doesn't work like you wanted it too don't immediately throw it out even if you hate it! You may be able to use it for something else or learn of a way to fix it later. Some of my best work stems from things that I didn't like at first!

Art by Veny

Art lovers from all over the world can buy acrylic paintings or even commission original, custom art by Veny herself. In offices and homes across the globe, Veny's artwork is an expression of feeling and emotion blended in color and captured forever on canvas.

Acrylic Painting Crafty Tip
I always recommend to artists to use acrylic paints. With practice they can be made to look like gouache, oils, watercolors and virtually every other technique. Acrylic paint carries as much depth as oils and is very strong and resilient.

Painting Crafty Tip
When painting a landscape scene, make sure the colours and tones become darker and more muted as your move towards the back of the painting. i.e. in a hill/mountain scene, the hills at the back (furthest away) should be the darkest of all with the least detail.

Watercolour Painting Crafty Tip
Use two jars of water when working with watercolours. Use one for rinsing your brush between colours and the other for clean water for painting. The softer your water, the more your paint solubility and flow increases. Overly softened water also acts like a wetting agent.

Andralynn Creative Designs

Whimsical, nature and story book inspired original paintings by Texas artist Andrea Doss. Affordable one of a kind art, from birds and flowers to characters and animals that look like something from the pages of a fairytale.

Acrylic Painting Crafty Tip
Acrylic paint can be used thick and applied like oil paint, or watered down and used like watercolor paint, making it a very versatile medium. It can be cleaned up with water and is odorless, so it can be used almost anywhere. Because it has good coverage, starting with a large brush and applying the background first is a good place to start. Add details to the foreground with smaller brushes and you're on your way to a masterpiece!

Studio Tuesday

Watercolor illustration and prints by david scheirer. Watercolor artwork inspired by nature and the seashore.

Watercolor Painting Crafty Tip
A traditional watercolor makes good use of the white of the paper. In this technique all white areas in the painting are left untouched by the watercolor. Sometimes watercolorists will use liquid masking to help with this.

Liquid masking is a rubbery substance that dries when painted on paper. You can paint over it once it is dry and it repels any watercolor paint from the area it's covering. It can then be taken up and a clean white area is left.
