Handbags, Purses & Duffles Crafty Tip

For those of us needing to sew through multiple layers of heavy duty fabric, it is a good idea to purchase a vintage sewing machine with metal gears. Use your vintage machine for items that could otherwise ruin a non-industrial sewing machine no matter how much you paid for it. For decent prices, check out Craigslist or local estate sales.

Handbags, Purses & Duffles Crafty Tip

If you want to make anything look professional that you’re sewing, find a crafty way to hide the seams. One way is to sew them inside and stitch them in with a lining. Another way, is to invest in an overlock sewing machine (Yuki, Kenmore, and Mercury are great) and overlock everything with a raw edge. You can even use an overlock as a trim. And don't forget to have fun while you're sewing!!!

Handbags, Purses & Duffles Crafty Tip

When looking for a nice, strong and sturdy bag, you want to ask the seller about interfacing. Interfacing is the lining that is used during the construction process. It is layered with fabric to give the bag strength, stability and shape. Interfacing comes in various weights, from very thin to very thick. When making a sturdy bag, bag makers should use heavy-weight interfacing such as the kind made by Pellon Peltex. Don't be afraid to ask the seller which interfacing they are using. Of course, if you are planning to use the bag to carry around just your wallet and keys, it's not really an issue. However, if you are planning to use the bag to carry around textbooks or a laptop, its definitely an important question to ask.
