Fabrics and Textiles Crafty Tip

The secret to designing with textiles? It's in the swatches! Think of a swatch as the physical embodiment of an idea - one with color, form and texture. And then combine that idea (in the form of a swatch) with others, until, five, ten, or fifteen swatches later, you have the visual representation of your BIG IDEA - one which you may never have come to with your ideas alone. That's the power of the swatch. Use it wisely!

Many patterns have multiple sizes. Use non-woven interfacing such as pellon to trace off the size you want. Pellon is very durable and you can pin on it over and over again. Make sure that you trasfer all markings, notches and fold lines; and label what the pattern is. If it's a vintage apron pattern, print that on each piece of pellon or the number of the pattern (like McCalls 5693). Fold your pellon pattern pieces when done and keep in a large envelope with the original.

Fabrics and Textiles Crafty Tip

Textiles can be made from many materials. These materials come from four main sources: animal, plant, mineral, and synthetic. In the past, all textiles were made from natural fibers, including plant, animal, and mineral sources. In the 20th century, these were supplemented by artificial fibers made from petroleum.

Want to prolong the life of your outdoor furniture cushions?

After removing the worn fabric covers from your outdoor furniture cushions and pillows, use some inexpensive plastic shower curtains liners to make some waterproof covers. Cover the cushion foam or polyfill with the plastic covers before covering with new fabric. This will prolong the life of your foam and/or polyfill cushions and reduce mildew. Make sure to use thread that is intended for outdoor projects. Add a zipper or velcro to the new fabric covers so that they can be removed for easy cleaning and storage.

Fabrics and Textiles Crafty Tip

Lots of today's fabrics do not need to be pre-washed before quilting and sewing. They are made with fabric dyes that won't fade, so these fabrics are ready to sew without the pre-washing and pressing required of other fabrics, getting you to your project faster and with less raveling!

Fabrics and Textiles Crafty Tip

Have you ever stuck gum to your clothes or a fabric? It seems nearly impossible to completely and safely remove gum from fabric, but there is actually a simple way to remove gum from nearly any kind of fabric. One quick and safe solution to remove gum is acetone, the kind of stuff women use to remove nail polish. A little rub with acetone on any fabric will take gum right off.

A great way to put scraps of paper and old books to use is by turning them into fun scrapbooks or albums. Collect all the scrap pieces and bind them between old book covers!
